Dear SCA Families,
Halloween has typically been associated with children doorknocking for lollies or playing practical jokes on unsuspecting neighbours. But we shouldn’t forget the more authentic link to all the saints.
The term ‘Halloween’ is shortened from All-hallow-even - the evening before ‘All Hallows' Day’ or ‘All Saints' Day’. Halloween is celebrated on October 31 which was initially a day of pagan sacrifice to mark the eve of the Celtic winter. Fires were lit and costumes were worn to ward off evil spirits who were allowed to visit earth that evening. In the 8th century, the Church designated 1 November as the Feast of All Saints thus Christianising the pagan festival.
May we all give thanks for the lives of saints and all others who have, through their lives, made the world a better place.
Prayers Please
I ask you to keep Mrs Priscilla Caragh and her family in your prayers. Priscilla’s Grandmother passed away on the weekend. May the Lord watch over them all at this time.
Donut and Netball/Basketball Courts
Please note the following reminders:
- No parking – this is strictly a no parking area at all times of the day.
- Watch your child – when dropping them off in the morning, please watch to ensure they walk into the playground through the gate near the Kinder block.
- When exiting the basketball court driveway between 3.00pm and 3.15pm, please give way to all cars on your right. (This to minimise a backlog of cars coming into Donut.)

The Mission Mass
Last Wednesday, our Year 6 Leaders attended the 2019 Mission mass. This year’s theme is “Do not fear, for I am with you”, During the mass, Archbishop Christopher spoke to the congregation about true missionary is moving from selfishness to selflessness and that call within us as members of a Catholic Community. Thank you to the Year 6 Faith Leaders who represented SCA in a respectful and reverent manner.
All Saints and All Souls Day
As Catholics, we begin November by remembering those who have died. We call the first two days of November All Saints Day and All Souls Day. November 1, All Saints Day, was called All Hallow’s Day in England because hallow is another word for holy. The night before was called All Hallow’s Eve, which was eventually shortened to Halloween. On All Saints Day and All Souls Day we remember that we are members of the People of God. United with God, we are also united with all Christians who have come before us in the Communion of Saints. We pray for those who have died because we have hope that they will live with God forever and that we will be reunited with them.
