Dear SCA families,
Most people would agree with me (for a change) when I say good relationships are important in our lives. A good relationship requires trust, honesty and forgiveness.
As a Christian school, we try to teach the children how to build a relationship with God by teaching how Jesus related to those in his life. Jesus made friends with (and leaders of) those who seemed week and sinful.
The Church gives us the season of Lent to reflect on ourselves and our relationship with God. Though a good look in the mirror might not always show us what we want, we can rest assured (trust even) that who we are, is exactly who God wants a relationship with.
Highly Accomplished Teachers
We are proud of Mrs Priscilla Caragh and Mrs Kristy Everding who, this evening, will be presented with documentation certifying them both as Nationally Accredited Highly Accomplished Teachers.
The national certification issued by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) is recognised in those other Australian States and Territories which apply the national framework for standards certification.
Certification is awarded by TQI to teachers who provide evidence from multiple sources that is assessed as satisfying professional practice criteria as described in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
As a highly accomplished teacher, Priscilla and Kristy are recognised as being highly effective and skilled classroom practitioners, who routinely work independently and collaboratively to improve their practice and the practice of colleagues.
Congratulations Mrs Caragh and Mrs Everding.
Staff Learning
In the past week we have welcomed three experts in to our school to provide coaching and support for our teachers.
- Toni Falusi worked with teachers in each year level to develop their awareness of digital technology skills and practices.
- Professor Kaye Lowe and Colleen Caddey-Murphy spent time in Year 3 and 4 classrooms and meeting with teachers, guiding our teachers through their ongoing work in The Writing Project.
If you’d like more information please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher. Thanks to the teachers for the time they have given to both of these projects.
Kindergarten
Our newest “big-schoolers” are into their fourth week at SCA. From next week they will be with us 5 days a week (after having Wednesdays off for the first month.)
Swimming Carnival
The Swimming Carnival (Years 3 – 6) is at Queanbeyan Pool this Friday (28 February) with the first 50m+ competition races starting around 9:30am. The 15m races will be hopefully starting some time around 12:00pm. Please come along to help out or support your children on this fun day.
Online Survey
Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn (CE), will shortly release an online survey to better understand your opinion of the value Catholic schools like ours provide and what that means for you and your children. The findings of this research will be used by CE to improve the offering of Catholic schools. The survey will be sent out to parents via email in the coming week and should take less than 15 minutes to complete.
Privacy and confidentiality
Please note that CE has engaged JWS Research to host the survey, collect the data and analyse the results. JWS Research is an independent, fully accredited, Australian research agency (see www.jwsresearch.com for further information). Survey results will be reported in the aggregate with individual responses remaining completely confidential and treated in accordance with the relevant privacy laws, including the Market and Social Research Privacy Principles and the industry’s code of professional behaviour.
I encourage all parents to respond to the survey. Thank you in advance for your time and participation.

Be the Light
'Let Your Light Shine Before Others'
Before beginning his ministry, Jesus went into the desert to pray. He didn’t eat or drink; he fasted and used the time to focus on his relationship with God. Today, during the 40 days before Easter known as Lent, we too are called to focus on our relationship with God. Catholics do three things to grow closer to God during Lent: pray, fast and give alms to those in need. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving are the three pillars of Lenten spirituality.
Over the next three weeks we will look at these pillars.
The first pillar of Lent is PRAYER. We pray to grow in our relationship with God and ask God for guidance on how to live our lives. In our prayer, we also thank God for the gifts we have been given and we pray for those who have less than we do. During Lent, we can make an extra effort to pray each day to become the person God calls us to be.
Year 5 will be leading our
Ash Wednesday celebration this afternoon
in the hall at 2pm. All welcome.
Mass will not be celebrated at SCA this Friday 28 February.
Mass for Friday 6th March will be celebrated with Year 4.
Hello!
I’m Kat and I am really excited to start as the new school counsellor at St Clare of Assisi. I have recently moved back to Canberra after spending three years in Adelaide. I am a qualified social worker and am passionate about working with children, young people and their families to develop resilience and improve emotional wellbeing. My favourite thing about working with children and young people is seeing their resourcefulness, strength and personal growth. I have a background in bush adventure therapy, family reunification services and case management for children and young people. I am looking forward to being involved in the school community and am available for phone consults with parents, and sessions with children on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you think your child would benefit from school counselling, I will need a signed referral form and will give you a call to touch base before seeing your child. (Referral forms are available from the Front Office or your child’s teacher.)
Looking forward to seeing you around.
Kat
