Dear Families,
On behalf of our school community, thank you to the wonderful parents and staff who set up and ran our sausage sizzle at school on Saturday. It was wonderful to open our school to this public use, and raise some funds towards our new playground equipment.
Purple Happy Day
Please remember that all children are invited to wear purple and/or yellow for our special day tomorrow. Our focus will be on wellbeing and care for each other, and the splash of colour will be a good reminder.
Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to the readers of SCA. At yesterday’s Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge Presentation, our school was awarded three main prizes for our reading endeavours. Special thanks to Mrs Katherine Austin, our passionate Teacher Librarian, for always encouraging reading in such a meaningful way.
Leaving?
We are now in the process of finalising class numbers and staffing for 2024. If your child is leaving SCA (unless already in Year 6), please let us know this week. Please use the link below.

Community Council
Our Community Council will have its second last meeting for the year next Tuesday, 24 October. If you would like to share any thoughts or questions with the Council, please feel free to send an email to council.scaconder@cg.catholic.edu.au .
2024 Class Groupings
Teachers will shortly commence planning class groupings for 2024 and will consider the following:
- gender balance;
- learning styles;
- learning difficulties;
- enrichment needs;
- work habits;
- social needs;
- health considerations;
- emotional needs;
- behaviour considerations and
- other relevant issues.
The usual practice for this process at SCA is to NOT seek parent assistance or any form of request.
I would like to make the following points:
- We aim for an equal spread of both positive and challenging characteristics in every class;
- Every care will be taken to ensure that your child is placed in the best situation to enhance learning and social development;
- Part of life is having to deal with people and situations we may not like. We need to build resilience in children, so they can face the reality of life;
- Where appropriate, advice will be sought from the Learning Support Teacher, Chaplain, previous teachers, School Counsellor, etc during this process;
- Teachers should already be aware of any issues you have;
- Teachers have the main responsibility for placing their current students in the most appropriate class for next year;
- All staff will examine the draft lists to highlight any concerns; and
- As Principal, I will make the final decision on all class placements.
- Students will be informed of their class placement for 2024 late this term and the opportunity will be provided for them to spend some time with their new class teacher.
- Class lists will not be sent home or displayed.
If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on matthewer@cg.catholic.edu.au or make an appointment through the Front Office.

T H A N K Y O U to our St Clare of Assisi MAJOR SPONSOR – Woolworths at Conder. Thank you for your kind donations towards our BBQ. Conder Woolies, again supplied all of the sausages, bread and other condiments for the BBQ. Please support Woolies, they do so much behind the scenes for SCA!
A big shout out to the Fay Holden/ SCA Parent Representative , our wonderfully engaged Community Council and everyone that supported the Referendum BBQ on Saturday. It was a very early start to the day and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your help and support in cooking, turning sausages and sales. There are a few lolly/sweets bags left over, these will be sold on R U OK? /Purple Happy Thursday by our Year 6 Leaders at recess and lunch for $1 per packet.
On Saturday, while some parents were turning sausages, eggs and bacon, others, under the gentle guidance of Anne Scollen, were preparing the generous donations from all of you in the multi-purpose room. Every single one of the donated items have been used and turned into beautifully presented gift baskets– with a little over a month until Christmas, why not buy a few at the fete! Christmas Shopping ..tick!
Thank you to Anne and all of the parents and children that helped out sorting and beautifully wrapping the gift boxes!

R U OK Purple Happy Day This Thursday 19th October
Thursday 19th of October, we will be celebrating
R U OK Purple Happy Day!
Purple Happy Day is an annual celebration of having fun and building awareness of the importance of good mental health and well-being for our kids.
This initiative started as a fundraiser in 2011, for a student with cancer who was part of our St Clare of Assisi community, Shanice Johnson. Sadly, Shanice passed away while she was at SCA and so we have continued this tradition to remember her but also to highlight the issues mentioned above.
During the day at school all children will be involved in a variety of activities on health, well-being, mental health and community. Students will receive a sausage sandwich at lunchtime. If your child does not eat sausages please send lunch with them.
On the day all students are invited to wear purple or yellow to help celebrate this fun day. It is a uniform free day.
Thank you for your support!
Chief Minister's Reading Challenge Awards.
Yesterday, 3 of our students attended the Chief Minister's Reading Challenge Awards.
The awards ceremony was held at the National Library and was attended by lots of other schools from across Canberra.
St Clare of Assisi won awards in all three categories that we entered. They were the K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 categories.
After the awards, we had morning tea and time for some photos. We saw some important people including Mr Ross Fox - Director of Catholic Education, Mr Andrew Barr - Chief Minister of the ACT and in the car on the way back we were stopped by the police to let the Prime Minister and some of his ministers pass.
Congratulations to all at St Clare of Assisi for reading so many books and completing the challenge!!!
Don’t forget to let us know if you are planning to leave St Clare of Assisi at the end of the year. (Year 6 exempt of course!) Please use the link below. We will soon commence the process of planning enrolments and class numbers for next year.
Please keep on returning your raffle tickets.
All tickets (whether sold or unsold) need to be returned to the office by 6th November.
On 13-15 October in Coffs Harbour NSW the 2023 OzTag Australian Junior Championship
took place. Our own Jade M of 4 Red represented the U9 ACT Cougars.
The Cougars went through seven rounds undefeated with six wins and one draw.
Meeting the Sutherland Shire Stingrays in the semi final the Cougars took the win in a nail
biter 2-1.
Through to the Grand final up against the West Sydney Tiger cubs in the main stadium.
The girls gave it their all. The Tigers and Cougars traded turns at scoring tries in a very
tight match. A few tough calls for the Cougars and a debatable disallowed try late in the game.
The Cougars fell short by one try in a final score 4-3.
A great achievement by all and we are so proud of Jade.
We’ve had some talented SCA students just represent ACT Oztag at the Australian Oztag Championships in Coffs Harbour.
Congratulations to Dakota (5G), Jasmine (5B), Darren (6B) and Alex (3G) who represented the ACT Cougars in the Australian Oztag Championships in Coffs Harbour, 13th October - 15th October 2023.
Outstanding achievement and level of representation for the State - WELL DONE!
