Dear Families,
Today (Wednesday) is the feast of St Anne and St Joachim. They are the grandparents of Jesus. I am sure they were both very proud of Jesus just like normal grandparents. When my own kids were younger and their grandparents came to visit, they couldn’t wait to show them all their art work and class awards. Imagine when Anne and Joachim visited Jesus and what he told them. ‘cured a blind man today…. fed five thousand people today all on my own’. My mum always says if she knew grandkids were this much fun she would have had them first. I don’t know what that says about me.
G’Day to all the wonderful grandparents out there.
Prayers Please
I share with you the sad news that a former student of ours passed away on the weekend. Lincoln Alcock was a student at SCA from Kindergarten to Year 6, and his father Jeff, worked here as our much-loved Janitor/Groundsman for a number of years. Please keep the Alcock family in your prayers at this time.
May the Holy Spirit gently comfort Lincoln’s family, and may he rest in the peace of our risen Lord.
NAIDOC Mass
On Friday last week Catholic Schools from across the archdiocese gathered at St Christopher's Cathedral in Manuka, to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Many of our Indigenous students represented SCA. Thanks to Mrs Kennedy and Miss Maher for taking the students. A small selection of photos is available on the Catholic Education Office website.
Safe/Unsafe Foods
When sending food to school with your child, please consider the health of others. We have a number of students with life threatening allergies to nuts.
Three-Way Conferences
Thanks to the many parents who met with their child’s teacher this week. As educators, we know it’s vital that children’s learning is actively supported at home and school. Keeping in touch with your child’s teacher is a great way of supporting your child to learn and grow.
Hats On
Though it’s still cold, the UV is on the increase, so we remind you of the school policy regarding exposure to the sun: Simply stated, from August until May, there is a ‘No Hat – No Play’ policy. Therefore, from next Tuesday (1st August) all children must wear their school uniform hats while outside during recess and lunch.
It was once said…
Mirrors can’t talk; lucky for me they can’t laugh either!
Blessings to you and your family.

Dear Parents and Carers,
This week Years 3 and 5 will receive your child’s NAPLAN Report. Below you will find NAPLAN Student Reports Information for Parents.
What’s changing?
From 2023, proficiency standards replace the previous reporting of student NAPLAN results that used numerical bands and the national minimum standard.
What are proficiency standards?
Proficiency standards describe what students are expected to know and should be able to do in literacy and numeracy at the time of NAPLAN.
There is a proficiency standard for each test area within each year level.
Further NAPLAN information.
Here you will find the NAPLAN parent fact sheet and an example of a NAPLAN individual student report, which will assist you when you receive the report this week.
If you have any queries about your child’s NAPLAN results or would like to discuss these further. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Spelling at SCA
Several Parents have asked about the development of spelling so they can help their children at home to improve their spelling skills. As of next week, Years 3 to 6 students will begin a Spelling Program called Spelling Mastery. There will be more information in next week’s newsletter.
Footsteps Program
All of our students enjoyed their first dance session today. When young children study dance, they learn perseverance and self-motivation. Dancing encourages children to experiment and find different paths to solving problems. It is vital in a child's personal development that they learn the importance of trial-and-error and that, if at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Ask your sons and daughters to show you their latest dance moves and perhaps there could be a family “Chicken Dance” after dinner.
Have a happy week.

Assistant Principal (Acting)
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of travelling to the Cathedral to attend the NAIDOC Mass with our Indigenous students. The students were a credit to the school and to their families – sitting in the front row of the Cathedral, in front of the Archbishop, they displayed reverence and consideration throughout. During the homily, his Eminence discussed his meetings with Miriam Rose Ungunmerr Baumann OAM, 2021 Senior Australian of the Year. Miriam Rose has been a pioneer in the development of Aboriginal spirituality, developing the practice of ‘Dadirri’. Dadirri, which can be defined as ‘inner deep listening and quiet still awareness’ aligns with our Christian Meditation practices, an Archdiocesan focus over the next year. When we participate in Dadirri, we connect with the earth and we listen to how God is speaking to us. To quote,
‘We wait on God, too. His time is the right time. We wait for him to make his Word clear to us. WE don’t worry. We know that in time and in the spirit of dadirri (that deep listening and quiet stillness) his way will be clear.’
To learn more, you can visit Dadirri_Handout.pdf (miriamrosefoundation.org.au). Archbishop Prowse was moved by Miriam Rose’s deep connection with her faith but also with the land, seas and sky. He challenged the congregation to attempt Dadirri and reflect upon our own Meditative practices. How often do we make time to meditate on the Scripture or to sit and listen to God?

Sunshines Match Report
It was a cold and frosty start to the morning, but the Sun was Shining and the Sunshines were excited to be on the court. We welcomed back Ava who had broken her ankle at the start of the season, and she played an amazing game. The girls worked well together as a team and played a great game against the mighty TVAFNC Tornados. It was a wonderful start to Term 3 netball.
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO:
Toby B from 2 Green played at half time during the GWS Giants vs Gold Coast Suns game on Sunday 23 July. Toby plays for Auskick Pros U8 White. He had a great time and wants to go to more AFL games as he loved it so much.
