Dear Families,
A special Sunday
May is traditionally known as Mary’s month. It is also the month in which we celebrate Mother’s Day. In honouring our mothers and grandmothers each year on Mother’s Day we are also honouring the nurturing and life-giving role they fill in our lives and in the plan of God. In a special way Mary is their model in this truly blessed and unique dignity of motherhood. They, in turn mirror for us aspects of Mary our spiritual mother, and of the source of all life - God.
We pray this week for all mothers and mother figures and ask that God will bless them and reward them for their goodness, and most especially for the gift of life they have given to us.
Happy Mothers Day to all of our mothers, grand-mothers and mother-figures.
Just Occasionally
Our Canteen has a wonderful manager, Michelle, who works hard to ensure all orders are served on time each day. We also rely on volunteers, but fewer people have a weekly or fortnightly time to help.
Have you considered taking a personal day once a term just to help at your child’s school. If this is something you would be interested in doing, please check in with the office, or contact Michelle directly (michelle.wood@cg.catholic.edu.au) .
Athletics Carnival
We are excitedly looking forward to the perfect weather that this coming Monday will be sure (please, please, please) to bring. Please remember to send your child to school dressed in their sports uniform (with House Team coloured shirt if they wish), ready for an active day outside.
Parents are welcome to come along to spectate, or even lend a hand, at Woden Park Athletics Field, Ainsworth St, Phillip.
New Babies
There was certainly something in the water at SCA last year. In recent weeks, three of our staff have had a baby boy join their family. Congratulations to Peter Olney and Laura with Charlie, Luke Brown and Jess with George, and most recently, Laura Adams and Damien with Louis. We look forward to all three of them starting Kindergarten in 5 years time.
Community Council Open Meeting and Resilience Information Session
Thank you to Ima Gina, our school Counsellor and Karen Snowball, Chaplain and Front Office for presenting a valuable information session on building resilience in children. The participants spoke positively about the things they heard, and are all looking forward to putting a few of the tips into practice. If you’d like more information, please feel free to contact either Karen or Ima.
This session was followed by our first Open Community Council meeting of the year. Besides the usual Council members, we had two parents take the opportunity to join us. They had a chance to see the collaborative and positive council discuss the following matters:
- 2023 Fete
- School budget
- 2023 Strategic Plan
- Catholic Education Community Council Review
- New playground equipment
- Plans for a new ELC at St Francis of Assisi, Calwell
- Enrolments
Welcome
We are pleased to welcome Mrs Cherie Ruzvidzo to our SCA family this week as the class teacher in 6 Blue.
Reconciliation Day Public Holiday
On Monday 29th May (Week 6), the ACT will mark Reconciliation Day with a public holiday. As it is a public holiday, all schools in the ACT, including SCA, will be closed on that day.
Enrolments – Close on 26th May
We have a great school, with wonderful kids, dedicated staff and supportive families. Please spread the word amongst family and friends, reminding those with pre-schoolers that enrolments close on Friday 26th May.
Mothers Day Celebrations
All mums, grandmums and mother figures are invited to join us for breakfast and a social gathering, this Friday, 12th May, between 7.30am and 8.30am in the school Hall.
It was once said…
When your mother asks, “Do you want a piece of advice?”, it is a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway. Erma Bombeck
Blessings to you and your family.

From The Assistant Principal Week 3
This Term, our Library will see the children at SCA learning a wide range of topics and develop their literacy skills.
Mother's Day
As we celebrate Mother's Day this weekend, we remember all women, our own mothers and Jesus' mother Mary. Pope Francis says of Mary -
“She listens as Mother. Just like, and more than, every good mother, Mary defends us from danger, she is concerned about us even when we are concentrated on our own things...Mary is there, praying for us, praying for those who do not pray. To pray with us. Why? Because she is our Mother.”
Congratulations to the children who will be awarded white cards at the 8.45 am Friday Morning Assembly

Swifts Report
It was a beautiful day for netball on Saturday! This week the SCA Swifts played the Holy Family Smarties, and while we didn’t come away with the win the girls never gave up and all played really well! A big thank you to the parents from both the year 4 teams for volunteering on the bbq.
Please support our local businesses who have been so grateful and generous.
