From The Principal Week 3

Dear SCA Families,

holy_see.png

Following the deeply pastoral legacy of Pope Francis, our newly elected Pope Leo XIV now takes up the call to shepherd the people of God. His election brings with it both hope and anticipation as we listen for new ways the Holy Spirit will guide our Church under his leadership.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV is the first American and the first Augustinian to lead the Catholic Church. His extensive missionary work in Peru and leadership roles within the Church reflect a deep commitment to service and pastoral care.

Pope Leo XIV's election marks a historic moment - a unique blend of American roots and global experience. His early words and actions suggest a continuation of Pope Francis's emphasis on humility, social justice, and outreach to the marginalised. In his first address, he called for global peace and highlighted the importance of unity within the Church.

From the balcony of St Peter's, Pope Leo reminded us: "The Risen Christ walks with us still, not as a distant figure of history, but as the living presence that animates our communities and inspires our mission." As we continue to walk in the light of the Resurrection and live out our school vision to Be the Light, may we take inspiration from both Pope Francis’s legacy and Pope Leo XIV’s fresh call — to bring hope where there is fear, unity where there is division, and joy where there is despair.

Let’s keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he embarks on this significant journey, guiding the Church with compassion, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to the Gospel

A Prayer for Pope Leo XIV

Risen Lord,

You are the Good Shepherd who never leaves your flock untended.

We give thanks for the election of Pope Leo XIV. Bless him with courage, compassion, and clarity of vision.

May he lead with love, serve with humility, and speak with boldness the truth of the Gospel.

Guide your Church in this new season, that we may reflect your light in the world.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vinnies CEO Sleepout – Thursday 19 June

Homelessness can happen to anyone — but so can kindness. Who will be the first SCA family to sponsor me???

This year, I’m once again participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, supporting Australians in need. For one night, I'll be sleeping outside to raise awareness and much-needed funds. Before you forget, please click on CEO SLEEPOUT - Matt Egan-Richards and turn your good intentions into action. Your support is appreciated – and needed!

Covered Walkways

We have a brand-new, covered walkway! Thanks to Catholic Education, students and staff can now walk between the front office and all classrooms under shelter from rain, wind and, on occasion, hail. (Hopefully Music and Indonesian rooms will not be too far off!) Previously, our Year Two classes had to hope for dry skies when moving between rooms. I think you’ll agree the builders have done a great job of ensuring the roofing fits in beautifully with the rest of the school.

No After- or Before-school Use of Playground Equipment

Our playground equipment has been designed to support age-appropriate development of agility, coordination and confidence — when used properly and safely under supervision.

To ensure student safety, children are not permitted on the playground equipment before or after school. (Students attending OSHC may use the equipment after 3.30pm, under the supervision of OSHC staff.)

We appreciate parents’ support in respecting these guidelines, which help us uphold our duty of care for every child.

Scarves, Coats & Beanies

The cooler weather has brought out scarves, coats and beanies — and we love seeing our students rugged up and ready for learning. Please ensure these items are navy blue, and clearly labelled with your child’s name. The lost property fairy thanks you in advance.

Mother’s Day Celebrations

A warm thank you to Nikki Dwyer and her team of helpers who made our Mother’s Day Breakfast such a special occasion. From set-up to pack-down, and everything in between, it was a wonderful community effort. Thank you to all who came along to celebrate.

Athletics Carnival

We’re holding out for perfect weather tomorrow — Thursday 15 May (please, please, please!).

Students should come to school dressed in their sports uniform, with their House-coloured shirt (optional) and a school hat. It’s set to be an active day outdoors.

Parents are very welcome to attend or lend a hand at Woden Park Athletic Track, Ainsworth Street, Phillip.

Reconciliation Day Public Holiday

On Monday 2 June (Week 6), the ACT will observe Reconciliation Day with a public holiday. As such, all schools in the ACT, including SCA, will be closed.

It was once said…
