RE News Week 8

Wooden_Cross.jpg
This Sunday's Gospel is from the book of Mark: a follower of Christ must take up a cross.
The focus of this Gospel passage is on Peter's insight. When Jesus asks Peter a question, Peter demonstrates the disciples' growing awareness of Jesus' true identity. This is the first time the disciples are invited to express their thoughts about Jesus. However, when Jesus begins to explain what it truly means to be the Messiah – including facing persecution and death. Peter tries to persuade Jesus that he shouldn't go through that. Jesus responds sharply to Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan!" This is a reminder of the temptation Jesus faced in the desert at the beginning of his ministry when he struggled with the type of Messiah he was meant to be. Adapted from Reflections by Greg Sunter.
